Eid-al-Fitr 2015/1436: Happy Eid

Allah

Eid Mubarak to everyone who is celebrating Eid-al-Fitr after a month of fasting. I hope your day is filled with happiness, fun and thankfulness to Allah (God) for all his blessings.

Above is the Arabic word for Allah (God) and some of his ninety-nine names, beautifully painted on papyrus paper.

At the end of Ramadan muslims around the world have a day of celebration called Eid-al-Fitr. Muslims have a great meal with family and friends, give each other gifts and money, and wear nice, often new, clothes. In preparation of Eid, my sisters and I went to an Eid exhibition in London to see what new designs of outfits were available to buy. The outfits available were designer pieces and more expensive than I tend to buy but it was nice to see what other styles were around. My photos didn’t come out too well as the lighting in the room wasn’t as bright as I would liked, but hopefully they give an idea of what was on show.

There was a nice range of beautiful outfits, from heavily decorated dresses with pearls and diamantes, metal and thread embroidery to less extravagant outfits with just thread work or prints. Some were more suitable for weddings than an eid celebration but it was nice to see the intricate work that went into making some of these outfits.

As well as clothes there was a section that had stunning metal clutch purses and colourful jewellery. And to complete the look there was also a makeup artist on hand to give beauty tips and makeovers to guests, which my sisters trialed. We were also treated to drinks and fancy cupcakes and biscuits to keep our energy levels up.

We didn’t end up buying anything in the end as although many of the outfits caught out eye they were just a bit too expensive and out of our budget, but we did enjoy talking to some of the designers and looking at lots of pretty things.

Take a load off

bench

Alas, London is at a halt again due to the Underground tube strikes. On the plus side, on my long walk to the office I did come across this pretty bench which looks so inviting; shame I couldn’t make use of it though. I hope all those affected got to work ok and aren’t too tired from the journey in.

Garden strawberries

strawberries

I recently posted about the flowering strawberry plants that I have in my garden this year, and with the warmer weather they’ve now begun bearing fruit. There’s only a few ripe ones at a time but it’s satisfying to check them regularly and see if there’s any that can be picked.

The savory side

In an earlier post I talked about my visit to a chocolate fair and how diverse a range of chocolates were available and how pretty and creative they were. As part of the fair there was a section for cheese and wine lovers and other savory snack for those who don’t have such a sweet tooth. I don’t drink and I’m not a fan of cheese but I was intrigued to see just how many different colours and shapes there were of cheese, so I followed the cheesy whiff and came upon lots of varieties.

cheese

There were some impressively big cheeses, and some ‘holey’ ones like you see in cartoons, and there were lots I’d never encountered before; some with blue veins running through them and others in colourful hues, each with their own taste and texture. I didn’t taste any as I’m no cheese connoisseur but I did take a close look at a few.

I didn’t spend too long in this section and I moved onto other savory snacks that were available. There were some Italian truffle and olive oils and various pickles. I didn’t buy any of these but I did opt for some roasted chili flavoured cashews which tasted pretty good.

Some other things that caught my eye were some really unique cheese boards, each with a different style and embellishments. I particularly liked the ones with inlaid Mother of Pearl

I didn’t seek out this section especially, but having a quick look at the stalls was interesting. I think it was a bit different to find at a chocolate fair but I didn’t have to pay any extra and it was another taste for food enthusiasts to enjoy.

I really enjoyed my visit to the chocolate fair and liked seeing all the different foods and chocolate goodies. I hope to be able to go to more food festivals soon.
