Durdle Door, Bournemouth
I recently went on a day trip to Bournemouth and in particular to visit Durdle Door. Now, I’d seen a couple of photos on the internet and I had an idea of what to expect, sort of…what I actually found was a breathtaking view of the coast which was amazing. I’ll stop trying to explain and show you my photos instead which I took on my DSLR camera.
This is the view you see from a steep walk down towards the coast; it appears all of a sudden like a well kept secret

I love how the movement of the water can be seen in the second picture
Then walking further down you see the famous Durdle Door which is also a World Heritage Site
What I loved the most about this place was that it looked as beautiful in real life as it did in photos I’d seen, in full, vivid colour. I would definitely recommend it as place to visit and to get some amazing shots.
Here a few other photo’s I took
You can also see my sisters account of the day on her blog Harelquin’s Tea Set
What I’ve learnt so far
Image
When I started my blog a couple of months ago, my first post was about what I wanted this blog to be about and how I’d just started a photography course. I thought I’d now share some of what I’ve learnt as I have now done several units.
So far I have learnt what different photography terms mean and how to use them, and although I am still trying to put this to use in practice, it certainly makes you think about how to incorporate them into your photos.
For example, depth of field means to take a photo where the subject and the background are all kept in focus
I also found using different shutter speeds can help create different effects; so a fast shutter speed freezing a picture

and a slower shutter speed allowing motion to be captured within the picture (sorry this one’s not great, I’m still practicing)
I think my favourite unit so far though has got to be the one explaining composition, and how placing the subject in the photo in a certain way can tell a story or guide a viewer through the image. Also how to make use of horizontal, vertical or diagonal lines to create a particular feeling. Vertical for enhancing feeling of height

or diagonal to draw the viewers eye through the image
I think I’ve always known most of this in my head, of how placing the subject in the frame in different ways can create various moods, and how making details stand out in different parts of an image can also draw the viewers eye in one way or another, but I am finding the course really helpful in just putting into words and better explaining to me how to make my photos stand out by thinking about what I’m trying to convey to the audience.
I’ll post my progress and learning as I continue through the course, and hopefully my photos will gradually improve as I go.
Postcard London

This makes me think of those typical landscape pictures that you get on souvenir postcards. Only problem with mine is that it’s slightly wonky! I still like it, although maybe I’ll have another go when I next go down and see if I can do better.
Sand, sea, sky
Image

I love this picture and the different textures and colours that distinguish the sand, sea and sky; each so different but just as nature intended (and if you look hard enough, there’s a tiny white dot on the sea which is a yaht)
Smiling seal
Image

I took this photo at a seal sanctuary in Cornwall a couple of years ago. I really like that I was able to get a picture of the seal face on – which was really tricky as they are fast swimmers.
Its not as glossy a picture as I would like but i’m still pleased with the colours and details that has been picked up
Lovely white boats
Image

This picture was taken at a park where I live, I really like the striking white of the boats against the green and blue of nature
Weeping willow

This is another photo from my phone camera, I love the green and the sweeping branches of these trees
Water flowing
Image

I have attempted many times at trying to capture flowing water . This was one of my earlier shots using a point and shoot digital camera. I quite like the picture, and the way the water has been frozen. I’ll keep trying though and post photos of the ones I like
Red water flower

I’m no sure what this flower is called but I love the vivid red colour it has.
Perhaps can someone enlighten me on the name?
