A light in the dark

Candle
We’re in the first week of the New Year and there’s already been some excitement in my house, well kind of; we had a blackout. The downside was there wasn’t a lot to do while we waited for the power to come back on, but the upside was being able to make the most of the situation and taking some photos of the pretty candles that we lit. Good thing my camera was charged.

Floating leaf

I thought this was a nice photo opportunity; to capture a lone floating leaf in clear blue water which fills the fountains in Trafalger Square, London. I really like how the light dances on the surface of the water, creating a sense of movement with the worn tiles on the bottom adding texture and detail.

Remember

“Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot…”

It’s Guy Fawkes night (also known as Bonfire night) in the UK today, which means that there will be lots of fireworks and sparklers being lit to commemorate the event when Guy Fawkes was arrested for trying to blow up The House of Lords on 5th November 1605

I don’t really celebrate the occasion but it’s nice to light a few sparklers and watch the firework displays in my neighbourhood

The best of 2013

2013 has been an exciting year for me with regards to photography; I finally managed to get myself a DSLR and was able to take some great photos with it at some amazing places. I have also been learning more about photography through a course as well as through all of you bloggers out there. Some of you have left helpful tips, while others have left kind and encouraging words, but I think most of all I feel that having seen photos that you have taken and published on your blogs you have really set the bar high, with beautiful, amazing shots of the world around you. I thank you all for your support on my blog and for helping me see the world in a different perspective.

I hope you all have a happy and successful 2014 and I leave you with some of my favourite photos from this year.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Let There Be Light!

Image

This is my attempt at this week’s photo challenge, light. I love this image, with the glow of light emanating within the red Chinese lantern, which hangs beneath the bright blue, sun lit sky.
