Comic Con London 2013

Last weekend in London there was a Comic Con event, and being a bit of a self-confessed geek I just had to go. I’ve been meaning to go to one of these events for a few years now but have never managed to get round to it for some reason or another. This year I knew my brother-in-law was going so asked him to get tickets for me and my sister.

Now I wasn’t sure what to expect from an event like this; I know the main and biggest one is held in San Diego, USA, which I hope to go to one day, and I’d seen on American TV shows and films, conventions and events such as this that always seem to attract a large following, but I’ve always felt that these kind of events would be a bit more toned down in Britain, with people enjoying such an experience but being a bit reserved about their passion for comics and films…boy was I wrong!

When we got to the Excel Centre in London where the event was being held there were so many people, outside and in, with many of them dressed as characters from comics, films and other popular shows – I thought it was great

There were stalls selling original drawings of comic characters, as well as classes you could attend to show you how to draw in different styles. There were several actors there for signings and photos and just lots of quirky things to look at and buy

I really hope to go again next year and maybe even be brave enough to dress up myself, but for now here’s some photos which I took on my digital camera. I found the lighting at the venue not quite bright enough, so some photos aren’t as clear as I would have liked. Maybe I’ll take my DSLR next time.

I would love to hear from others that were at the event this weekend or have been to similar events in the past, and hear what you found interesting or any tips that you’d like to share

We are selling South East Asian influenced jewellery and Islamic accessories as well as handcrafted cards and anything else that’s beautiful, cool, fun or geeky that fits our style.

We named the shop Feroza which was our grandmother’s name, who was treasured by us all and it also means turquiose which is our mum’s favourite colour.

Here’s some of the items that we are selling at http://feroza.myshopify.com/

What I’ve learnt so far

Image

When I started my blog a couple of months ago, my first post was about what I wanted this blog to be about and how I’d just started a photography course. I thought I’d now share some of what I’ve learnt as I have now done several units.

So far I have learnt what different photography terms mean and how to use them, and although I am still trying to put this to use in practice, it certainly makes you think about how to incorporate them into your photos.

For example, depth of field means to take a photo where the subject and the background are all kept in focus

I also found using different shutter speeds can help create different effects; so a fast shutter speed freezing a picture

and a slower shutter speed allowing motion to be captured within the picture (sorry this one’s not great, I’m still practicing)

Motion

I think my favourite unit so far though has got to be the one explaining composition, and how placing the subject in the photo in a certain way can tell a story or guide a viewer through the image. Also how to make use of horizontal, vertical or diagonal lines to create a particular feeling. Vertical for enhancing feeling of height
Horizontal

horizontal for stability

or diagonal to draw the viewers eye through the image diagonal

I think I’ve always known most of this in my head, of how placing the subject in the frame in different ways can create various moods, and how making details stand out in different parts of an image can also draw the viewers eye in one way or another, but I am finding the course really helpful in just putting into words and better explaining to me how to make my photos stand out by thinking about what I’m trying to convey to the audience.

I’ll post my progress and learning as I continue through the course, and hopefully my photos will gradually improve as I go.

The beginning?

I love taking photos, always have done, and I am often pleased with the results. I have just started a photography course to learn the ‘technical stuff’ and have bought my first DSLR (which I’ve wanted to get since I was a teenager).

I aim to get better as I continue the course, and I hope that it will reflect on my photos
